               The Region

Bordeaux~ la capitale du bien vivre.

So much to see and so much to do in this à la mode and extremely civilised city.

With one of the longest and most elegant neo classical river fronts in Europe, Bordeaux is an architectural mix of medieval streets, gallo roman remains, art nouveau restaurants and  dynamic twenty first century  confidence. From  a visit to the "Cité du Vin" to meandering through the old city, from bargaining in the flea market beneath the spire of St Michel to feasting the eye on antiques at the "Village de Notre Dame", Bordeaux is a city that is a pleasure to walk around.

One is never far from good food and wine to resuscitate the weary. Here are a few favourites:

La Tupina

Miles

La Salle à Manger des Chartrons

La Belle Epoque

Les Tontons

Bordeaux

"Wine is the most healthful and most hygienic of beverages."

Louis Pasteur.

Aquitaine is the largest wine region in France.

There are 140,000 hectares of vineyard planted.

8 million hectolitres of wine are produced every year.

St. Emilion~ a Landscape shaped by Vines.

A day trip to this holy grail of wine production should be on the bucket list every discerning wine enthusiast.

The Romans planted vines on the hillsides of St Emilion as early as the second century.

The Gallo-Roman poet and consul Ausonius, retired to his estate " the nest of his old age" as he put it, now the happy home of Château Ausone.

It would be a grave mistake to leave Saint Emilion without a wellfilled box of old fashioned macaroons from Nadia Fermigier

Wine is life.....

Don't forget a visit to Sauternes - best on a beautiful autumn dusk....
